Letters and manuscript: to Lord Melville, 1802 Feb. 16-1811 March 15.

Two ALS (16 p.) to Lord Melville (Colombo, 1802 Feb. 6 and July 12) describing conditions in Ceylon and saying that the natives were pleased that the island was in British possession. The revenue from taxes and cinnamon would not be equal to expenditure for a long time. He had made a complete tour of the island with Mr. North and had also surveyed the Pearl Banks. Other items include a letter on his brother's proposed business venture, several letters of recommendation, and a statement of military allowances to European officers in Ceylon (1808).

Henry Dundas, the first Viscount Melville (1742-1811), statesman, was the father of Robert Saunders Dundas, the second Viscount Melville (1771-1851), also a statesman. Henry Dundas was educated at Edinburgh High School and University, before becoming solicitor-general for Scotland in 1766. He was M.P. for Midlothian 1774-1790, except for a few months in 1782, when he sat for Newtown, Isle of Wight.
